Above is a photo from a session I did hair and makeup for last month with Bill Sitzmann of Minorwhite Studios. Bill produced some stunning images of violinist Kaitlyn Maria Fillipini, which are on her website now. I’m a raving fan of Bill’s work so it’s always great to collaborate with him. He, like me, sees beauty in the grotesque and disgusting, and although Kaitlyn is far from either of those things, I think the straightforwardness of his style conveys Kaitlyn’s beauty quite effectively.

Above is this month’s cover of Metro Magazine, a local publication. I had the opportunity to do makeup for this photograph, alongside my boss, Eric Burden, who coiffed our lovely models. Captured by the brilliant Laurie and Charles. Featured are the ladies of STEP Group. This was my first time doing makeup for Laurie and Charles and it offered great lessons. I always welcome criticism from eyes as discriminating as theirs. I am constantly impressed by the subtleties they’re able to mold and isolate, really taking their images to the next level and certainly offering me a more refined perspective as I continue to grow as a makeup artist.

So much to catch up on! We’ll start with this video. I was given the opportunity to contribute by my friend Jon Tvrdik, who directed it and I couldn’t be more delighted with how it turned out! All the apartment scenes were filmed in my doll castle/luxurious boudoir. I styled the hair in the wilderness scenes—using exclusively alcohol free product as so not to cause Jenna to burst into flames.

Lovely Dasha was previously highlighted only, really lovely, yes, but without too much interest. We brought a lot more melty dreaminess to her look last night by incorporating bits of blushy peach and pink throughout her locks, really concentrating on the ends. I adore the end result but wish it was all more evident in the photo! Melty sherbet hair. The best kind.

This PERFECT BLOWDRY tutorial Sarah and I did was a feature on Fash Flood in October, though I thought I’d share it for those who aren’t readers, although you all should be. Find my step-by-step instructions HERE ! And do remember, I will do a tutorial on ANYTHING, at ANY TIME, for ANY REASON. Do not hesitate to book an appointment or even email me if you are not local!

Catherine is, quite simply, darling. I began doing her hair almost two years ago, and recently she’s been annoyed that she has so many curly haired friends who are able to style their hair so minimally and still have it looking great. She’s joked in the past that she needed a perm, but perms just don’t offer the ‘natural’ looking loopy result that she desired. When I began at Bungalow/8 I was delighted to learn about the Re4mer service—while similar to a perm in process, it is much gentler on hair and breaks bonds randomly, which allows you to simulate a natural/beachy look much more efficiently. I am SO impressed with the results I’ve seen throughout the salon, and definitely the results I saw with Catherine tonight. You’d never know she was born with pin-straight half Asian hair! [as seen in the photo on the right]

A couple of weeks ago, I returned to my homeland, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to create the wedding hair for my dear friend Erin Castle. The moment she announced her engagement to her now-husband, Jon, I knew I had to be the one coiffing her on that day. Erin, like my younger self, has a slight addiction to cutting her own hair in the bathroom mirror, so in the past six month’s we’ve had A LOT to grow out, though I am very proud to say there isn’t one piece of extension in that hair. We’ve gone from wanting fingerwaves, to 50’s bombshell hair, to this, a wonderful rockabilly-style quiff/french roll hybrid that allows Erin’s striking features (those brows!) to take center stage and, with the delicate flowers fashioned to the back, shows off their love of the simplicity of nature. These GORGEOUS photos were taken by Ashley Rieck of Imani Photography, and if you’re planning a Sioux Falls wedding, I highly recommend her. Haircolor is, of course, by me. Erin is now addicted to being Super Red, so I look forward to taking her through that journey.

Omaha Fashion Week is here and gone, but what fun it was! This year, I was asked to assemble hair and makeup teams for both Emma Erickson and Princess Lasertron, two designers/friends whose work I absolutely delight in.

For Emma’s collection, I enlisted the services of Elliot Dougherty and Katie Hanke, two former coworkers of mine I knew would execute my vision perfectly. We fashioned side ‘buns’, which were essentially just mounds of curls, that would build cohesion within the variety of Emma’s collection. I felt the style would lend itself well to the headbands Emma had created, convey the youthful feminine ease of Emma’s beautiful pieces, and accommodate a variety of hair textures and lengths. Makeup was a smoky eye done in shimmery taupes and pewters accompanied by a fresh, dewy face. For those wondering, the lip is MAC’s Creme Cup.

Megan’s collection, hair and makeup-wise was inspired by songstress Kreayshawn. Megan loves to illustrate the variety of styling options her collection offers, making it accessible for every girl. We wanted to convey this idea with a number of different hair looks on the runway. Cornrows, to curls, to Audrey Hepburn buns went down the runway. Makeup was a bit more streamlined, with bold brows, a clean white lid, and a GIANT cat eye. Bold black liner is MAC Fluidline in Black Track, lipstick is Snob by MAC, a personal favorite of mine. Hair geniuses Elliot Dougherty, Octavia Carter, and Jason Lassek assisted in coiffing Megan’s models.
